Description:
This report evaluates the feasibility of introducing freshwater crayfish for commercial aquaculture in Namibia. It reviews global crayfish production, highlights their biological advantages—such as simple life cycles, omnivorous feeding habits, and suitability for semi‑intensive culture—and assesses species that could be considered for introduction. Drawing on international experiences, including unsuccessful introductions elsewhere in Southern Africa, the report outlines both the potential benefits and ecological risks associated with establishing a crayfish industry. It also proposes that UNAM develop small‑scale demonstration cultures to support future aquaculture development and to assess the role crayfish farming could play in broader initiatives such as the ZERI project.
