Description:
This report highlights the University of Namibia’s efforts to strengthen national capacity in science and technology (S&T) for sustainable socio-economic development. Since its establishment, UNAM has prioritised training in the basic sciences and expanded research capacity through the creation of the Multi‑disciplinary Research Centre (MRC), the country’s only government‑funded research institution of its kind. The document summarises the proceedings of the 1996 international workshop on the Management of Science and Technology in Namibia, which brought together national and international experts, policymakers, academia, and the private sector to examine opportunities and challenges for integrating S&T into national development. Key presentations addressed Africa’s socio‑economic challenges, the role of S&T in development, and the alignment of Namibia’s National Development Plan (NDP‑1) with a national S&T policy. The workshop aimed to raise awareness among stakeholders and generate actionable recommendations for advancing science and technology in Namibia.
