UNAM astrophysicist Prof. Michael Backes co-authored a pivotal study published in Nature with fellow Global Young Academy (GYA) members, analyzing global promotion criteria for professorship across 121 countries. The findings challenge reliance on publication counts and reveal four dominant profiles for academic evaluation: output metrics, visibility and engagement, career development, and societal impact. With contributions from three UNAM-affiliated GYA members, the study advocates for more equitable and meaningful assessments that promote integrity, inclusivity, and global research excellence.
