Description:
Three fourth-year Microbiology (Honours) students from the University of Namibia—David Shooya, Margaret Simon, and Amoré Scholtz—are gaining hands-on research experience at the National Commission on Research, Science, and Technology (NCRST) through a specialized training programme in GMO analysis. Under the mentorship of Dr. Mwangala Nalisa (UNAM) and Wennyth Farmer (NCRST), the students are working at the National GMO Testing Laboratory using advanced tools like the QuantStudio 5 PCR system to detect genes such as Bt-11 and MON 810 in imported genetically modified seeds. This collaboration between academia, government, and industry is enhancing students’ molecular biology skills, fostering a passion for research, and preparing them for impactful careers in microbiology.
