Abstract:
This book, *The Lower ǃGarib / Orange River: A Cross-border Microregion examines the multinational significance of the Orange River, particularly its lower reaches where it forms the border between Namibia and South Africa. Challenging the common perception of the river as a South African entity, the authors highlight its cross-border nature and its historical, ecological, and socio-economic importance. They explore how this section of the river has shaped regional histories, particularly in Namaqualand, and how migration, resource use, and contested identities have contributed to the emergence of a distinct cross-border microregion. The book provides a nuanced perspective on the interconnected histories of Namibia and South Africa, emphasizing the river’s role beyond national narratives.
