Abstract:
Media is seen as a communicator to many throughout the world. It informs the unformed, entertains people and also gives a reflection of the world to the people.
This research study aimed at identifying the different types of media used by people in the two towns of Windhoek and Rundu, to also find out the· reasons behind the media preferences, to get an idea of the frame of time people are involved with different types of media, also to understand how the different types of media are accessed by many in the two towns as well as to have a broader understanding as to which of the media is believed to have a greater coverage by the people from the two towns. A total sample size 52 respondents was picked as representatives, of which 32 filled in questionnaires and the other 20 involved in four different focus group interviews two from each town. The data was presented using tables. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of people from both towns of Windhoek and Rundu prefer television the most, and social media is
used by many, mostly youth in both towns. A few numbers of people do read newspapers for long but rather just scan through. Reasons for media preference comes with the availability of the media, most of the household own television set and that is why majority in the two towns prefer television the most. The study further revealed that people from both towns do think that Radio and social media are the types of media that can have a greater coverage compared to others, reasons being that radio can reach at places without electricity because they use batteries and social media because majority of people in the world including youth and adults are involved in social media.
