Abstract
This study was about libraries and communities and it used a case study of Greenwell Matongo community library in Windhoek. The main aim of the study was to investigate what role does Greenwell Matongo Community Library play in the community and how do users perceive the library. The study used qualitative and quantitative research methodology and for the sampling of the population the study used non probability sampling method, namely quota sampling and convenience sampling techniques. The study had a sample of one hundred library users who participated in the survey, a group discussion with non-library users and an interview with one of the library staff. The study used content analyses to
analyse qualitative data and microsoft excel to analyse quantitative data. The main research question was; "What role does Greenwell Matongo library play in the community and how do users perceive the library?" The key findings indicated that community of Greenwell Matongo perceived the library in a positive way; they viewed the library as a place for variety information sources and they used the library to search for information. Moreover the finding indicated that the community participated in the activities taking place in the library. The main recommendation of the study is to introduce new services in order to improve its image.
