The study conducted among students at tertiary institutions as a case study at University of Namibia and Polytechnic of Namibia, to asses the skills of students in the use of the Internet. The main aims of the study were to establish the level of knowledge and skills Internet users have at tertiary institutions. The study also assesses the students level of awareness for the resources available on the Internet, to determine the level of Internet skills and knowledge possessed by students at tertiary institutions, to identify the use being made of different Internet resources by users at tertiary institution and to establish the pattern of use of the Internet by different user groups. The data was collected from the University of Namibia students and Polytechnic of Namibia students. These are students who are using Internet in the library, computer laboratories at both University of Namibia and Polytechnic of Namibia. The study found that most students only know the basic use of the internet such as sending E-mail, accessing entertainment, games, and checking sports and reading newspapers on the Internet. Many respondents lack advanced searching skills. The study also found out that many respondents do not have formal training on how to use the Internet. Many respondents indicated that they learnt how to use the Internet though observing friends |
