The aim of the research is to assess the influence of education on social mobility. The study involves an exploratory investigation which is primarily based on a literature study. The historic-comparative method is used to fathom the research problem in a historic comparative perspective

Initially the relation and development of the three main concepts, namely education, social stratification and social mobility, are considered. In the next chapter attention has been paid to the relation of education and social selection. Lastly the relativity of education to the concept of equal opportunity has been considered

The following summary of conclusions can be drawn from the research: Education is a factor in the process of social selection for upward social mobility, but in comparison to other factors, it is of minor importance. In this respect the influence of education is over-estimated

The provision of education to the lower socio-economic groups has not resulted in equality of opportunity for upward social mobility. In relative terms the lower socio-economic groups have not obtained the anticipated improvement of life's opportunities

Recommendations: Relation between education and teaching should be pursued at all times at the primary and secondary stages of formal education. Next to formal education other channels and criteria for upward social mobility should be explored. Co-operation between a formal education system and the employment sector is of vital importance in order to dismantle the disfunctional influence of formal education on the process of upward social mobility

Since the research has been only an exploratory investigation, it is of major importance to undertake a comprehensive study
