This report presents findings from the SSD/LIFE research programme on Community‑Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) in West Caprivi, Namibia. Implemented since 1991 by the Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation (IRDNC) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the project aims to promote sustainable development, rebuild wildlife and other natural resources, strengthen community capacity for resource management, and enhance local socio‑economic benefits. The study focuses on monitoring and evaluating governance structures, community participation, and livelihood impacts through annual household surveys and institutional assessments. Key areas investigated include community subsistence strategies, attitudes toward conservation, the functioning of local institutions such as the West Caprivi Steering Committee, Community Game Guards, Community Resource Monitors, and community‑based enterprises. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges and prospects of CBNRM in the region. |
