The purpose of the investigation is to provide an overview of the historical events which influenced training of nurses in South West Africa, with special reference to Owambo. The Owambo were chosen as ethnic group for various reasons - first, there was my own personal interest in, and experience with them. Second, this was the first group in South West Africa to which self-government was granted. And then, the health services in Owambo are better developed than in other areas of the Territory, and the political development there makes development at other levels a matter of urgent necessity

I attempted to show how the geographical composition, the heterogenous population, the sparse distribution, and the traditional lifestyle of these people influences health needs and services. Their particular health needs demand not only that the people who provide health services to them must be trained to act independently yet responsibly, but must also be informed of their background and culture

Finally, current nursing training is evaluated against this background
