This study looks at an attempt by ECOWAS to restore peace and order to a conflict torn member country. The situation in Sierra Leone created problems for the neighbouring African states. Apart from the killings, the amputation of limbs of innocent civilians, and the destruction of property, the economic loss of the conflict to all the members of the sub-region is also considerable. An unprecedented refugee situation also resulted from the conflict and the victims had to be fed and provided shelter under existing poor conditions. Soon after the restoration of peace to Liberia the regional economic organization realizing the disruptive effect of the situation in Sierra Leone on the smooth functioning of the organization, redeployed ECOMOG from Liberia into Sierra Leone to restore peace there. ECOMOG was in Sierra Leone until May 2000 when the United Nations Observer Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) took over the task of completing the work from ECOWAS |
