dc.description.abstract Abstract by author: en_US
dc.description.abstract African swine fever is a very contagious disease of pigs. Data collected on African swine fever over the past 30 years have been analyzed. The effect of African swine fever on the pig population in Namibia was found to be well below 1 percent in terms of the mortality rate. It was also found that the disease mainly occurred in the first three months of the year. Additional information that was found is that the pig population in Namibia has been constant with very little growth. The reason for this is not well understood but possible reasons were suggested such as the unavailability of feedstuffs, poor marketing strategies by the pig industry and maybe unsuitable climatic conditions en_US
