dc.description This report was prepared for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) as a background study for the forthcoming White Paper Management of Freshwater Fisheries in Namibia (1995). It provides a socio‑economic assessment of freshwater fisheries across Namibia, with particular emphasis on management practices and policy options. The study highlights the increasing importance of freshwater fish resources for livelihoods especially in the northern regions and the ecological vulnerability of river systems such as the Okavango, Zambezi/Caprivi, Kunene, Cuvelai, and Orange. Drawing on regional comparisons from sub‑Saharan Africa, the report reviews traditional and government fishery management systems, fishing adaptations, state dams, and aquaculture. It concludes with guidelines for future freshwater fisheries management grounded in sustainable utilization and the integration of both ecological and social considerations. en_US
