dc.description This report provides an overview of the book sector in the ten SADCC (Southern African Development Coordination Conference) member countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Commissioned by UNESCO in 1991 as part of its programme on book and reading promotion in Africa, the study sought to compile coherent and reliable data to support policy dialogue and inform the development of a regional book strategy. Using UNESCO‑designed questionnaires, the report attempted to gather detailed information on literacy, language use, publishing and printing capacity, book production, paper consumption, libraries, and training in the book sector. However, due to limited resources and the lack of available national data, many countries could not provide the required statistical details. As a result, the report presents a broad qualitative overview of the book industry in each member state, with particular emphasis on the dominant role of the school textbook market. Recommendations for strengthening the regional book sector are provided in the concluding section. en_US
